Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 15th from 12:00 noon to 9:00pm is the Republican Party primary election for Washington County District Attorney.

This GOP primary is a crucial local election that will either give Washington County residents a responsible, ethical, and experienced D.A. named Robert Winn, or a continuation of a drab and irresponsible D.A.’s office under incumbent Kevin Kortright.

Robert M. Winn, a life-long resident of Washington County, was D.A. for 16 years and has successfully prosecuted the county’s most notorious and historical murder cases in its long history.  During the time Winn was District Attorney, he implemented Victim’s Advocate and Domestic Violence programs.  He helped drug and alcohol abusers in the Drug Court program which gave them the opportunity to reform their lives and vastly reduced re-arrests.  His record speaks for itself.

With current D.A. Kevin Kortright, the county has seen a huge budget increase for the District Attorney’s office of almost 35%, reckless spending of $167,504, and an endless reign of easy plea deals and lowered sentences for sex offenders and violent criminals.  He is a typical politician who would rather respresent the interests of out-of-touch politcos rather than the taxpayers in our communities.  Doesn’t Washington County deserve better than what we have been getting?

That is why we are reminding registered Republican voters to vote for our endorsed candidate, Robert Winn.

Once again, incumbent Washington County District Attorney Kevin Kortright has been publicly declared a failure and incompetent in The Post-Star newspaper. This time it wasn’t about him dropping the ball on some important prosecution, it was a slaying piece concerning his re-election campaign practices at the Washington County Fair. Up until this point, his campaign, or lack thereof, has barely made an impact during this Republican primary race. If it wasn’t for the Washington County Republican Committee strong-arming its committee members, he would barely have a chance, so it’s surprising his first real efforts of trying to get his name out there in an election — which is only weeks away — could turn so negatively against him.

Kortright’s campaign is reflective of his mentality and work ethic during his term in office as district attorney.

Robert Winn, who is challenging Kevin Kortright for the Republican ballot line on Sept. 15, has received the Conservative Party endorsement and is receiving tremendous growing support for his campaign.

Winn was district attorney for 16 years until 2005 and has a record of proven fairness and integrity while the lead prosecutor for Washington County. Winn prosecuted high profile murder cases and established programs for the county, including a domestic violence program and a victim’s advocate program.

In comparison of both candidates, you can see a stark difference in the quality and competency of who is currently in office and who should actually be in office. My full support is behind Robert Winn for district attorney.

I am a Fort Edward resident and am currently in law school at The University at Buffalo Law School.

While on break from college, I contacted a friend of mine with extensive experience in the Washington County criminal justice system looking for an internship.

He suggested that I contact former District Attorney Robert Winn to see if it would be possible for me to intern with him.

Mr. Winn graciously took me up on my offer to assist him in his office, and I have been interning with him for the past three summers and during educational breaks.

As I have begun to learn the law more extensively, my appreciation for his ethics, knowledge of law, and immense courtroom skills as a trial attorney have grown.

Furthermore, on occasion, I have referred friends and family to Mr. Winn’s law office, and he has always treated them fairly, honesty and with respect, as well as helping them to achieve outstanding and satisfying results.

I am well aware that I am not a politician, nor am I politically connected. I am just a town of Fort Edward native with roots to the community and a desire to practice law when I graduate from law school and pass the New York state bar exam.

It simply seems to me that the county is better served by a hard-working district attorney who understands the law, who has great experience with the law, and who will treat the members of my community (Fort Edward and Washington County) with respect and fairness.

It is hard work and it requires someone with a profound respect for the criminal justice system, which Mr. Winn has. For all of these reasons, I urge Republican voters to vote for Robert M. Winn in the Republican primary on Sept. 15.

The Warren County Conservative Committee is weighing in on a spirited political race in neighboring Washington County.

The committee announced its support for Robert Winn, a Republican and Conservative candidate for Washington County district attorney.

“This candidate has the knowledge and experience. I suggest you give serious consideration to the candidacy of Robert Winn …,” said Warren County Conservative Chairwoman Carol Birkholz, in a letter to The Post-Star.

Birkholz said the letter should be viewed as “a recommendation” of the committee, rather than an endorsement, because the race is outside Warren County.

Winn, a former district attorney for 16 years, is seeking to unseat incumbent District Attorney Kevin Kortright, who has held the post since 2006.

Winn and Kortright will face off in a Sept. 15 Republican primary.

Kortright already has the Independence line in the November general election, and Winn already has the Conservative line.

Birkholz said she was impressed several years ago when Winn took over a case in Warren County at the last minute in which one of her family members was a victim. He handled the case himself rather than delegating it to an assistant, she said.

I am not a politician, and quite frankly, have never been involved in politics, but I have been involved in coaching and teaching many of the young people of Greenwich and elsewhere in the county over the past three decades, and I think that my experience qualifies me to state an opinion about the current district attorney’s race.

I have known District Attorney Winn my entire life, having gone to grade school with him and graduated in the same high school class of Granville in 1972.

I can remember the terrible crimes involving the death of a Granville toddler and the murder of Susan Zanta in Argyle, which both occurred shortly after Rob Winn and I graduated from high school in Granville.

It was a tragedy that these crimes were not solved right away, but those of us who went to high school with Rob know that he had the type of intelligence and tenacity to solve these cases decades later. It does seem strange that someone who was still a teenager when these crimes were committed would be the person to prosecute both of these defendants.

I also saw that Rob was once named as the Arson Prosecutor of the Year for the entire state of New York for his handling of a major Hudson Falls case.

Rob graduated second in our Granville High School, Class of 1972, and as the class valedictorian, I was pleased to see Rob make something of himself.

All kidding aside, as a coach and community member concerned deeply about the young people of our county and with a strong commitment to excellence, I will be supporting my former classmate, Robert M. Winn, in this year’s election for district attorney.

I was astounded to see that Kevin Kortright is running for Washington County district attorney and does not even know what hours the polls are open.

Kortright is now passing out campaign materials telling the voters to go to the polls between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sept. 15. This is wrong. The polls are open on Sept. 15 from noon until 9 p.m., just as they always are for primary elections. It would seem to me that Kortright should have checked this out before misinforming the voters of Washington County.

Unfortunately, Kortright does not seem to care. He wasted taxpayer money by setting up a sex offender watch program when the exact same information was already available on the New York state Web site.

He wasted another $3,600 per year on a silly program to have “tips” called into a company in California, as opposed to calling the State Police, Washington County Sheriff’s Department or the local police departments. No wonder his budget has increased more than any other department in Washington County.

I urge all Republican voters to go to the polls on Sept. 15 from noon to 9 p.m. and vote for Rob Winn. We need him back as district attorney.
